Why Sitting is Bad For You

THE GETONUP CAMPAIGN

Having been an osteopath for 17 years, and having treated thousands of people with sore backs (and suffered myself), it became obvious to me that sitting aggravates most people’s low back pain (and sciatica).  This led me to do a simple “in-house” survey of 200 patients with low back pain; 81% of them mentioned sitting as something which aggravates their lower back pain.
Having a city center practice, most of my patients have sedentary jobs, but worse than that – most of my patients have sedentary lifestyles!!

I am wholly committed to raising this as an issue in the wider community, calling on Governments and employers to take this up as a campaign in the hope that future generations of adults will not suffer the pandemic of low back pain that we have had over the last 50 years Gavin Routledge. Clinic DIrector, ActiveX Clinics

  • 23% adults are chronic low back pain sufferers
  • 5 million working days lost to back pain each year (UK)
  • £1.6 billion annual health care costs of back pain (UK)

Think how often you are in a sitting position.... at work, on the way to work, on the way home, at mealtimes, watching the TV, in restaurants, cinemas, theatres.... etc....  Couple this with the fact that sitting is fundamentally bad for your lower back (and some other bits) and we're half way to explaining why so many people (approx 23% of adults) are chronic back pain sufferers.
